Black Hills
In 1868 the Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed leaving the Black Hills mountain range in sole ownership of the Lokota Indians. Just six years later George Armstrong Custer led an expedition through the mountain range and discovered the hills were filled with gold. Thousands of miners flooded the area and set up mining towns like Deadwood and Lead. The Lokota Indians, frustrated that US Army couldn't keep out the trespassers, started the Black Hills War led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This would be the last major Indian war on the Great Plains.
